Prepare to paddle
You may have seen the headline that two men perished on a canoe trip earlier this year in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA). Although many people associate the BWCA with walleye and lake trout fishing on remote lakes, there’s more to it than that. Rivers, elevation changes, exposed rock and waterfalls are all part of the wilderness appeal. Four men in two canoes were fishing above Curtain Falls – a Class V whitewater feature – when one of the boats drifted past the point of no return and capsized. One man was swept over the falls. The two men in the other tandem canoe attempted a rescue of the third man still above the falls and also capsized. In all, two men died and the survivors suffered a broken hip and broken leg, respectively. Asked what they could have done differently, one of the survivors – who had been wilderness tripping for 17 years – told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that none of the four were wearing life jackets and that may have made a difference.
