Crews search for 2 missing boaters near Whiting, Indiana

WHITING, Ind. (CBS) -- Crews were searching Lake Michigan on Friday evening for two missing boaters who jumped into the water near Whiting, Indiana.

Officials said a boat with 12 people on board was sailing in the lake near Whiting. Around 2:30 p.m., one individual jumped off the boat to go swimming.

They began to struggle because of the winds and waves present on the water at the time, according to Indiana Conservation Officer Alex Neel.

Those on the boat tried to move closer to him but couldn't because of the conditions. A second person then jumped into the water, but both began to struggle in the water.

A third individual put on a life jacket and also jumped into the water.

Police received a 911 call at around 2:40 p.m. Crews found the boat about a mile-and-a-half off the shoreline. Police marine unit officers boarded a small powerboat that had been damaged near the mouth of the Indiana Harbor near the Inland Steel plant.

The U.S. Coast Guard found the person who was wearing the life jacket. He was taken to a local hospital and later released.

The other two men were not located.

Neel said no foul play was suspected nor citations issued in connection with the incident.

Crews stopped their search because of the conditions on the lake. The search will continue Saturday morning.
