BOONE, Iowa –The Farm Progress show features technology and large new equipment. But for some solutions, farmers look to Washington D.C.

USDA Secretary, and former Iowa Governor, Tom Vilsack came to speak at the show, where he announced his approval of a study for a H5N1 vaccine for cattle to protect from Avian Influenza. He also spoke about efforts to generate more income streams for small to medium sized farms.

At a media avail, Vilsack was asked to comment on ag companies, like John Deere, pulling back from Diversity Equity and Inclusion.

“Most effective policies have been served by a diverse group of people from different experiences, and as a result they end up with a better product, so at USDA we made a concerted effort to be supportive of diversity equity, and inclusion,” said Vilsack.

The show also featured a congressional panel discussion on the Farm Bill which the House and Senate are working on.

There was discussion over if SNAP programs should be separated from the farming part. House Ag Committee Chair Rep. G.T. Thompson, of Pennsylvania was on hand.

“I’m working every day. I know these members here are helping with that and getting us a position we were able to bring this Farm Bill forward to the House floor in September,” said Thompson. “We don’t have that many weeks left in September before the election. I’m committed to doing our very best because you need this.”
