INDIANAPOLIS –You might recall the case of a young girl from Ohio who was raped and came to Indiana to get abortion medication from Dr. Caitlin Bernard. After that case, Todd Rokita filed a lawsuit against IU Health and other parties, claiming they violated patient privacy laws like HIPAA. Now, the hospital system is making some changes in response. “This is a win for patients and the 36,000 healthcare providers at IU Health,” said Attorney General Rokita. “Protecting patient privacy is crucial for reliable and honest healthcare.” Although the lawsuit was voluntarily dismissed, Attorney General Rokita said they could refile it later. “IU Health rejected the best interest of patients and taxpayers alike when they set the tone by initially refusing to cooperate with our office,” Rokita said. “We are pleased the information this office sought over two years ago has finally been provided, and the necessary steps have been taken to accurately and consistently train their workforce to protect patients and their health care workers.”
