Just like that, we have arrived at the final game of the Colts preseason.

Colts fans entered the preseason with questions about Anthony Richardson, mainly his health and how far along he was after missing most of his rookie season with a shoulder injury. After the first two games, those questions remain.

Against the Broncos, the Colts employed an extremely vanilla offense that didn’t utilize Richardson’s legs at all. The Colts predictably struggled, and Richardson struggled with his accuracy in a short and underwhelming return to the field. Against the Cardinals, the Colts rested their starters after a pair of joint practices with Arizona.

Putting a lot of stock in a preseason game performance is a dangerous game. The Colts aren’t going to show their hand with how they are going to use Richardson in the running game, and they aren’t going to expose him to any unnecessary hits either. Still, with the Bengals having already announced that they will be resting their starters against Indianapolis on Thursday, it would be extremely reassuring for Colts fans if the starting offense came out and put up some points.

Obviously, we won’t get any real answers on how Richardson will hold up from the hits, and how far along he is in his development, until the regular season starts. But if the Colts offense comes out on Thursday and has a lackluster showing against the Bengals backups, it’s going to be a very nerve-wracking 2 ½ weeks for Colts fans.

During the Wednesday edition of The Ride With JMV, John spoke to Kevin Bowen from the morning show The Wake Up Call w/KB & Andy, as well as Zak Keefer of The Athletic. Topics they covered included:

    • Anthony Richardson’s health and progress
    • The job security of Chris Ballard
    • What we need to see from the starters against the Bengals
    • And more!
