SHELDON, Ill. — A sheriff’s deputy from Newton County, Indiana was shot in Illinois Sunday night, say police.

Deputies from Newton County were assisting deputies with the Iroquois County, Illinois Sheriff’s Office with an investigation during the evening hours Sunday. At some point during that investigation, Corporal Brandon Schreiber, a 5-year-veteran of the department, was shot by a suspect.

The shooting happened in Sheldon, Illinois, which is about a ten-minute drive west of the sheriff’s office in Kentland, Indiana.

Corporal Schreiber was taken to Iroquois Memorial Hospital before being flown to the Carle Trauma Center, where he remains in critical condition as of Monday afternoon.

Sheriff Shannon Cothran of Newton County says the case is being investigated by Illinois State Police, therefore the department will not comment on the case at this time.

Sheriff Cothran has shared this address if you’d like to send your best wishes to the Schreiber family. They ask for privacy while Corporal Schreiber is in the hospital.
