WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Wichita County is being recognized for its efforts to support the arts in the community.

Wichita County will be honored with the “Lasting Community Impact Through Arts Advocacy Award” at the Texas Arts Advocacy Awards Dinner in Waco on Thursday, June 27, 2024.

Wichita Falls Arts Alliance awarded $25K for sculpture honoring Charlye O. Farris

The Wichita Falls Alliance for Arts and Culture nominated Wichita County for supporting the “Legends Project,” which honors Charlye Ola Farris , the first African American woman licensed to practice law in Texas.

The project will culminate with the dedication of a permanent bronze sculpture of Farris on the grounds of the Wichita County Courthouse.

Retired County Judge Woody Gossom and Wichita County Precinct 1 Commissioner Mark Beauchamp will accept the award on behalf of the county. The sculpture is set to be unveiled this fall.
