WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — A woman who left her purse with $1,300 cash in her car with her 10-year-old granddaughter in the backseat tracked down the man accused of stealing the purse.

Jose Villagomez was charged with burglary of a vehicle.

On Saturday, July 13, 2024, the woman said she got out of her car at the old Van’s Pig Stand on Burkburnett Road with her purse in the front seat and her granddaughter in the backseat.

She said a Hispanic male went to the car, opened the front door and grabbed her purse while her granddaughter asked him what he was doing.

The granddaughter said he did not answer and got into a white car with a white female passenger and drove off. The woman said her purse contained $1,300 in cash, as well as a debit card, credit cards and a food stamp card.

She said the owner of the business told her the suspect was a regular customer and her granddaughter gave her a detailed description of the man.

She searched the incident on social media with the man’s description and said she got a response with the name of Villagomez as a possible suspect. She then found his mugshot on another website and said it matched the description.

She said she found his address and went there to speak to the suspect’s mother, telling her all she wanted was her purse and items in it. Then she said they began calling Villagomez on his phone asking for the return of the purse and that he first denied taking it. However, she said in a later call he agreed to bring the purse to her.

Next, an employee at the restaurant where she works called her and said a man had dropped off a purse with her identification inside. She said approximately $1,000 of the cash was missing from her purse.

Surveillance video from the restaurant shows a Hispanic man walking in with a purse, giving it to an employee and then leaving.

The employee was shown a photo lineup, and police said he picked Villagomez as the man who brought in the purse.

Villagomez was arrested and, as of this posting, remains in jail.
