WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — As we anticipate the Paris Olympics, we want to remind you that the Special Olympics are currently underway, but the organization is calling out to the community for help.

This nonprofit organization relies on the generosity of individuals and businesses that provide support, both through volunteering and financial donations.

Volunteers are the lifeline of the Special Olympics program. They serve as coaches, officials, committee members, competition assistants, and speech coaches, providing other essential services to athletes with disabilities.

In addition to volunteering, every dollar donated directly impacts the lives of these athletes, enabling them to access training programs, coaching, and specialized resources that empower them both on and off the field.

“Donations come into play because we’re trying to make sure that we can continuously support these athletes and the programs that they have out there. Without donations, these programs are going to go away, unfortunately, and that’s going to leave them in a situation where a lot of them are left out.” Area 9 Program Director Kyle Thompson said.

Thompson also added that the Olympics create unity and inclusivity.

“It provides them with, you know, an opportunity, an outlet so that way they can get out in the community and be seen. It provides them with the discipline and maturity and all these other things that go along with playing these sports.” Thompson said.

With help, the Special Olympics can continue its commitment to create an atmosphere of encouragement and support that inspires participants to push beyond their limits.
