WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — The Wichita Falls City Council’s upcoming session on Tuesday, Aug. 5, has a busy agenda.

A few items up for a vote might be of particular interest to the citizens of Wichita Falls.

First, the old Hotel of Wichita Falls, off Central Freeway and sitting on the banks of the Wichita River, might have its future decided soon. The city agreed to purchase the land it’s on from owner Wichita Falls Hospitality for $4 per square foot, but the exact amount of land the city might buy is still unknown.

Assistant City Manager Paul Menzies said 30 to 35 percent of the land will become public park space if the vote goes through. The deal is up for a vote after the hotel sat vacant for over a decade following its closure in 2012. It has since fallen into disrepair and become a site for vandals and trespassers.

Another item up for a vote is a grant of $1.36 million to support the construction of the new Vicki and Jim McCoy Aquatics Center at the Bill Bartley Family Branch of the Wichita Falls YMCA. The center is expected to have a 10-lane lap pool with a slide and a splash pad to entertain swimmers of all ages. Construction is expected to be completed by the Fall of 2025.

Finally, Midwestern State University has a vote set for the meeting. It seeks up to $1 million to support a proposed student success and military education center.

The other agenda items include adding the elections of a Councilor at large and Councilor positions for Districts 1 and 2 to the November ballot and a vote to increase the school zone speed limit in front of McNiel Middle School from 20 to 25 miles per hour.

The meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 5, in the Seminar Room of the Ray Clymer Exhibit Hall.
