WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The Wichita Board of Education moved to approve a settlement agreement with the Department of Justice on Monday. It passed 6-0 in a minute long meeting.

In May 2023, Wichita Public Schools was reported to be one of several districts in the U.S. involved in a DOJ investigation regarding classroom discipline. This issue was discussed at contract negotiations between United Teachers of Wichita and USD 259.

Back in May, USD 259 emailed KSN saying, “One of the subjects of the DOJ investigation is whether classroom discipline in all instances is being administered fairly.” They went on to say that Wichita Public Schools is not the only district involved and that this is part of a larger effort.

The district is not giving specifics about the settlement until Tuesday.
