WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Twenty-year-old Jim Sanchez of Wichita was sentenced on Monday for his part in the 2022 death of 23-year-old Vennie Kongvongsay of Wichita.

The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office said Sanchez was sentenced to 9 years and 1 month in prison after having pled guilty to murder in the second degree and aggravated robbery.

The shooting happened in the 200 block of E. 86th St. S. around 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 10, 2022. Dispatch took a call from someone reporting a body lying in a yard.

At the time, Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter said it was obvious the man, later identified as Kongvongsay, was dead. He said when the coroner turned him over, there was obvious trauma and a gunshot.

Sanchez was arrested with co-defendant Justin Welch in March 2022, a little over a month after the murder. Welch was sentenced in May.
