The City of Wichita will enter an agreement with Wichita USD 259 for the Park Elementary property at 1025 N. Main Street in Mid-town.

Before the $1 purchase can occur, the Kansas Legislative council must approve the sale, since the school was paid for by taxpayers. The city has 180 days to access the site for inspections and testing, to ensure the property will be suitable to use as a homeless shelter and multi-agency center.

Mayor Lily Wu says solutions to homelessness are not easy.

Federal approval from the Housing and Urban Development agency is anticipated by mid-late September. The city hopes to open the site as a homeless shelter by mid-late November.
