One person dead, four wounded in shooting in southwest Wichita, police say

Four people were shot and one was killed Friday night in southwest Wichita, police spokesperson Andrew Ford said.

“We are questioning a person of interest,” he said, adding that police think everyone involved was known to one another. “Homicide investigators are on scene trying to piece together what led up to the circumstances of this incident.”

Police were called about a person shot at 5:59 p.m. in the 4 800 block of South Gordon, which is near 47th Street South and Meridian. The shooting happened at a trailer park.

“Calling party saying she got shot in her right arm, not wanting to tell us who shot her,” according to Sedgwick County Emergency Communications scanner traffic. “Said they were outside of the address.”

A minute later, police were told three other people were shot.

Officers en route were flagged down in the 4700 block of South Seneca by a man who had been shot, Ford said. That’s about 1.5 miles from where the shooting was initially reported.

He said the man and vehicle on Seneca is “ related to the incident in the 4800 block of South Gordon.”

An arriving officer at South Gordon said they had one person unresponsive and needed more ambulances, police said.

A male died at the scene, police said. Arriving officers found three other victims. One of those victims had non-life-threatening injuries; the other two had critical injuries. Their status was unknown during a briefing at around 8 p.m.

Ford did not give the status of the man who flagged down officers on South Seneca.

This is at least the city’s 25th homicide of the year. There were 21 at this time last year.

This was also the second shooting this week with multiple injuries. Four teens were wounded in a shooting Thursday morning where 60 shots were fired .
