WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Girls Rock Science is in its eighth year at WSU Tech. Third through fifth-grade girls attended July 10-11, and sixth through eighth-graders are currently attending through July 18.

Girls can explore the STEAM field through hands-on experiences, such as learning about robots, drones, virtual welding, and virtual painting. They also get to meet women who are leading in the STEAM industry locally.

Amy Johnson with Koch Industries has an engineering degree, and she says those skills have opened many doors for her.

“We know that girls who have exposure to STEAM-related concepts and opportunities have increased confidence, self-esteem and creativity, and we need more women in STEAM fields in the workplace,” Johnson said.

Greg Schmidt, the director of the Future Maker Mobile Learning Lab, says they show robots to students so they can see the opportunities they provide.

“We use those to talk to students about robotics, what a robotic technician does, and their job,” Schmidt said.
