WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A man was critically injured after being hit by a car Tuesday night.

It happened around 11 p.m. near 21st Street and Payne Street.

Officers noted that the streetlights in the vicinity were not functioning.

“At this time, it is unclear whether this issue is related to an outage from Evergy,” said Kristopher Gupilan, a public information officer with the Wichita Police Department.

Wichita police are investigating the cause of the crash, including whether lighting in the area contributed to it.

“But we’re trying to figure out what exactly happened, including whether or not all the street lights out through here might play a factor in it,” Sgt. Steve Jerrell, Wichita Police Department, said.

People in the area tell us lighting is a problem.

“I’m like, in this situation, in this driveway, if you can see, there’s no lights at all. So, I don’t know if they’re not investing in these street lights, but they definitely have to,” Abigail Agusto, who lives in the area, said.

Police say the driver is cooperating, and the man is expected to survive.
