WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Thursday is the Fourth of July and an annual family event is back in Wilkes-Barre.

The Fourth of July is celebrated in many ways but one common way has become a tradition for many, and that’s heading to Kirby Park to enjoy all they have to offer. They have been doing this for about 50 years.

“We will have thousands of people here in Kirby Park. The best fireworks show in Northeastern Pennsylvania to the standard. It’s the one that’s been here forever plus we have 45 vendors that’ll be here. Food and events will also have all the great amusement rise as well,” said Mike Slusser the special events coordinator for the City of Wilkes-Barre.

Some things to keep in mind are restrictions such as no alcohol, no pets, and, no sparklers. As well as road closers and parking.

“The Market Street Bridge will be closed at 8:00 p.m. so you won’t be able to go over the Market Street Bridge once we get to that point parking is always difficult here. Of course, there’s a lot of people so you’re always trying to find a spot along Market Street or along in the neighborhoods through there,” explained Slusser.

What you can also expect here is carnival rides.

“The new ride this year will be the merry mixer that we’re putting in for here and every year we try to change out one or two rides just to keep it fresh and live and things up,” stated James Huey the owner of Carnival.

A vendor who’s been coming for the past six years says it’s the social atmosphere that brings her back.

“It’s right in our backyard. It’s great to have your family your friends everybody come out. It’s a beautiful day with all the entertainment and just to be here with everyone all your coworkers, your vendor friends,” says Ann Elick the co-owner of Maddy’s Dog House.

“Just smiles on the kid’s faces that’s that’s why we do this. This is my family’s 42nd year in business and that’s what we strive for,” added Huey.

The Carnival is open until 10:00 p.m.
