Lighting up the night sky in Wilkes-Barre for Independence Day

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Happy Fourth of July! A decades-old tradition that proved again to be a popular Fourth of July celebration.

Thousands turned out Thursday to cap off the city-sponsored festivities.

The grand finale of a classic firework display at Kirby Park has just wrapped up celebrations.

The traditional event that ran straight through the Fourth of July featured something for everyone.

A fireworks display thousands in northeastern Pennsylvania gather year after year to see.

“I think it’s one of the better ones in the area and like I said we live right in Plymouth so there’s not a ton of traveling were 10 minutes down the road,” said Plymouth resident James Delaney.

From trying to win a prize to eating fluffy funnel cake and enjoying ride after ride, thousands spent the day at Kirby Park right into the night celebrating Independence Day in a classic way .

“I’ve been coming here since I was a kid. I guess sorta like trying to pass on a family tradition and so to speak,” Delaney added.

Like many Delaney, his fiance, and their children made sure to be prepared for whatever weather because they weren’t missing out.

“And we figured the rain wasn’t too bad. We had umbrellas in the car so we didn’t want to let a little bit of weather stop us,” Delaney continued.

“It’s our first time coming to this. We are still having fun despite the rain,” said Keisha Watkins from Wilkes-Barre.

To Watkins and her family, the fun and games will never get old and the holiday will always signify something greater.

“Our freedom and the culture and everything like that,” Watkins stated.

Happy Fourth Of July,” Janessa and Isaiah said.

The Market Street Bridge was closed Thursday allowing for people to be on it and watch the fireworks.

Crowds were winding down as the Fourth of July celebrations came to a close.
