Media coverage of plans for the Rowan bypass project on U.S. Route 322 in Glassboro has focused on discontented residents, with few mentions of reasons for their objections. The plan, officially called “Rowan By-Pass,” is two-fold. The portion causing controversy involves diverting traffic from Route 322 (which splits the Rowan University campus) and sending it through a residential area known as Chestnut Ridge. This historic neighborhood is dotted with stately 100-year-old homes. Families have lived there for decades and generations.
VFW rep outlines organization’s scholarship opportunities
Kevin McElroy of the Westville Grove VFW gave a presentation to the Deptford board of education at its July 16 meeting on scholarships offered by the veterans organization. Once the board approves the contests, students can earn a scholarship by competing in one of two essay challenges, depending on their grade. The Voice of Democracy contest is for ninth through 12th graders and the Patriot’s Pen contest is for sixth through eighth graders.
