WILLISTON, ND ( KXNET ) — Williston Police are providing more information on the fatal shooting of a Williston man Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, 31-year-old Matthew Austin Gullo was shot by police during an encounter in which Gullo was allegedly wielding a knife.

In its update Wednesday, Williston Police noted only one officer discharged a firearm in the encounter. Following this initial encounter, the officer immediately requested paramedics.

“A secondary responding officer utilized a less-lethal launcher in an attempt to disarm Mr. Gullo, who was still holding a knife,” department officials said. “This measure was to ensure safety so officers could quickly administer emergency medical aid to Mr. Gullo.”

Williston Police also identified the two officers involved: Jason Barten, who has served with the Williston Police Department for 11 years, was the officer who discharged his service weapon. Alex Williams, who used the less-lethal launcher, has been with the department for nearly a year and has three years of prior law enforcement experience.

“As per department procedures following an officer-involved shooting, Officer Barten has been placed on paid administrative leave. The Williston Police Department will continue to support Officer Barten during this challenging time,” department officials said.
