HOLLY SPRINGS — The Wilson Tobs returned to summer collegiate baseball Coastal Plain League play Friday without a hitch in their swing after two days off in an 11-6 win over the Holly Springs Salamanders at Ting Stadium.
The Tobs piled up 12 hits, including three doubles and outfielder Mackenzie Wainwright’s CPL-leading ninth home run of the summer, as they remained unbeaten three games into the second half of the season. Wilson, 18-9 overall, is tied atop the East Division with first-half winner Peninsula while Holly Springs, 8-21 overall, dipped to 2-3 in the second half.
Wilson starter Kaden McCawley was roughed up a bit in the bottom of the first inning as he surrendered two runs on four Holly Springs hits, including an RBI double by catcher Lawson Odom, who then scored on center fielder Elijah Dickerson’s single for a 2-0 lead.
McCawey didn’t permit another runner past second base for the next four innings as he retired 12 of the next 15 batters he faced. Making his sixth appearance, McCawley got his first win after giving up two runs on six hits while walking none and striking out seven.
By the time he left the game, the Tobs had given McCawley a 6-2 lead. Cole Robinson smoked a two-out, two-run double to tie the score in the third. Wilson tacked on four more runs in the fourth as it chased Holly Springs starter Jacob Cabaniss (0-3) of Barton College. Cabaniss gave up the ball after issuing a base on balls to his Bulldogs battery mate, Tobs designated hitter Chase Waddell, to start the fourth. Waddell would come around on singles by catcher Brayden White and center fielder Mike Kelly. Both runners scored on shortstop Colby Ott’s two-run double after third baseman Jared Beebe, another Barton player, was hit by a pitch.
A two-out single by Robinson in the sixth was followed by Wainwright’s ninth homer of the season, giving the Tobs a CPL-best 25 dingers and an 8-2 lead. The Tobs tacked on three more runs in the eighth on Waddell’s RBI groundout, Kelly’s RBI single and wild pitch that allowed Wainwright to score.
Andrew Simone, a Barton reliever, followed Jared Hanson’s two shutout innings of relief by working through the eighth with just one walk. However, Simone ran into a buzzsaw in the ninth as the first three Holly Springs hitters singled, bringing in a run, before third baseman Trey Lyons slugged a three-run homer to end Simone’s night.
Tommy Lamar then retired the next three Salamanders to end the contest.
Robinson led Wilson with three hits while Wainwright and Kelly had two apiece. Each of the three, plus Ott, drove in two runs. The Tobs totaled 18 bases but left 11 runners on base. Four Wilson pitchers combined to walk just one hitter.
The Tobs will host the first-year Greenville Yard Gnomes on Saturday at Fleming Stadium before visiting the Tri-City Chili Peppers in Colonial Heights, Virginia, on Sunday night.
