Sharks-Flamingos rained out; Tobs have steep climb to Petitt berth

Depending on the perspective, the rain that fell throughout the boundaries of the Coastal Plain League on Monday night was either friend or foe of the Wilson Tobs.

The Tobs, who had their final night off this season Monday, were hoping the Florence Flamingos would help them catch the Wilmington Sharks, who were playing a doubleheader at Florence on Monday. But both games were wiped out by rain, leaving the Sharks still two games up on the Tobs for the second-best overall record in the East Division and a spot in the Petitt Cup playoffs that begin Sunday.

Wilson visits Wilmington on Friday in a game that likely will have major implications on that final East playoff spot behind first-half and second-half champion Peninsula Pilots, who have the best overall record in the CPL at 32-11.

The Tobs (23-18) will host Morehead City on Tuesday before playing at Tri-City Chili Peppers on Wednesday. Wilson returns to Fleming on Thursday to take on Peninsula then wraps up the regular season at home Saturday against the last-place Greenville Yard Gnomes after the trip to Wilmington on Friday.

The Sharks, who could have clinched a tie for the final playoff spot with a doubleheader sweep Monday, have just three games left with trips to Morehead City on Thursday and Tri-City on Saturday.

So, the Tobs aren’t dead yet but they have little room for error in their last five games and will probably need some help from the Marlins or Chili Peppers unless they win all five games.
