Update 6:14pm: Governor Hochul says she has deployed the NYS Police and other agencies to help in Oneida County. As the heat index rose and the potential for storms grew, a tornado has been confirmed in Rome, NY - just north of Utica. Photos from the scene show a church with its roof and steeple torn off, numerous downed trees and power lines, overturned vehicles - even a B-52 bomber on display at the Air Force base was moved by the strong winds.

U.S. News & World Report names Stony Brook University Hospital among Best Hospitals in New York
Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) has been recognized as a 2024-25 Best Hospital by U.S. News & World Report, ranking in the top 15 in the state. SBUH climbed to a No. 12 ranking overall in New York State out of more than 153 hospitals statewide, up from No. 13 in the state last year. In addition to ranking in the top 8% overall in New York State, SBUH also rated high performing in 5 adult specialties nationwide, including Geriatrics, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Urology and Pulmonology & Lung Surgery. The announcement was made in a press release on July 16.

SANDGATE, Vt. (WCAX/Gray News) - A teen in Vermont was seriously injured when she was run over by a Jeep with no one behind the wheel, according to police. Severe Storms Claim One Life in Central New York
A community is mourning the loss of one of their own after the severe storms that ripped through Central New York claimed a life. One person was killed in Canastota from the storm on Tuesday, July, according to village administrator Jeremy Ryan, who said most of the damage was along Barlow Street where a mandatory evacuation was issued. No word on what happened or who was killed.

Two members of the Union community are learning from a host of literary luminaries at this year’s New York State Summer Writers Institute. Ashley Dell’Oso ’24 and Mahir Mohammad Tazwar ’26 were awarded scholarships to attend the prestigious program, based at Skidmore College. End of an era: Former Phi Delta Theta House set to be demolished
The former Phi Delta Theta House, one of the most iconic buildings on campus, will be torn down after years of being plagued by structural and mechanical issues. Built in 1914 at a cost of $17,000, the house overlooking the 50-yard line at Frank Bailey Field has been largely vacant since 2012 after the chimney collapsed and the boiler malfunctioned.
