KWVH’s emergency broadcast tower goes up
After years in the making, and with the blessing of city and governing officials, the KWVH Emergency Broadcast Tower, a 50-foot structure, is breaking ground this week. The Tower is under construction at The Lumberyard, near the station’s “fishbowl” studio. It will give Wimberley Valley Radio its best chance for continuous operation during power and internet outages. The infrastructure is intended to deliver emergency alerts to the residents of the Wimberley Valley, including live updates directly from the U. S. President. KWVH will utilize the tower around the clock to transmit its FM program via a private signal to their 100watt low-power FM transmitter located two miles away. The tower is part of a security and infrastructure upgrade project which is expected to be completed by July 10th. Brach Thomas, KWVH Operations Director, and Matt Mendoza, KWVH Board Member chairing the Technology and Security/ Facilities Management Workgroup, are key contributors to the initiative. Spry Air Fiber is constructing the tower and landlord Buck Buccus has been a cooperative party throughout the process. Jim Donaldson, also a member of the KWVH board, worked extensively to negotiate agreeable construction methods and terms for both parties.

Nobody loves a crocodile
, I can’t think of a scarier creature than the crocodile. It’s the largest of all reptiles and it kills more human beings than do snakes, tigers, lions and leopards put together. Each year, about one thousand people are killed by crocodiles in Africa – most of them women and children. In the United States, including Texas, we have mostly alligators. The differences between the two are many, the most obvious being that with jaws closed, the alligator’s teeth are invisible, but the crocodile shows its long fourth tooth on each side of its lower jaw, giving it a most deceptive...

Dog Language in a Storm
Join Wimberley humorist Susan Rigby as she attempts to navigate “the small stuff.” We hadn’t had a real rain storm in many months, until recently. The night sky began to light up like an airport runway and the thunder started rumbling. My dog Seymour started whining, circling and periodically thumping his head on the side of my bed while trying unsuccessfully to join me. I pulled him onto the bed and tucked him under the blankets, thinking that if he didn’t see the light, he’d settle down. Nope. In the dark, I could smell his chicken jerky breath and feel his...

Senza Maeso distillery and tasting room opens
With standing room only available inside the Senza Maeso tasting room on Saturday last week, the Senza Maeso distillery and tasting room held its grand opening. Outdoors guests listened to live music and vendors offered a variety of things for sale including Senza Maeso merchandise. Brothers Jay and Ryan Gitman teamed up to produce an unusual hybrid spirit and liqueur created from the South American cape gooseberry. Bottled at a higher proof than traditional liqueurs with no added sugars, the taste is bright, balanced and complex with notes of apricot and citrus. It can be drunk neat, on the rocks or in a classic cocktail. The brothers have also created a vodka from corn called R.A.Y. Vodka. Senza Maeso, a Spanish-Italian hybrid term meaning “without a master,” reflects a brand based on years of experimentation into unique spirits. Located at 1090 FM32 in San Marcos, less than a mile from the junction of RR12 and FM32, the high concept roadhouse style tasting room and bar was inspired by science fiction themes. Tasting room hours are Thursday through Monday from 1 to 9 p.m.
