PHOTOS: Dirigo Lodge #104 gives away Bikes for Books
Dirigo Lodge #104, of Weeks Mills, recently presented 20 bicycles to students at the Windsor Elementary School in their sponsored Bikes for Books program. Every student is awarded a ticket for each book they read to be entered into a drawing for the bicycle give-away. This marked the 12th year the Dirigo Lodge sponsored the program.

Around 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday, state police responded to a report of a suspicious person in a vehicle outside a business in Barryville, New York.

Troopers detail shooting of man
BARRYVILLE – An Augusta, Maine man is in stable condition at an area hospital after a state trooper shot him on Tuesday. On July 2 at about 2:15 p.m., troopers in Sullivan County responded to a report of a suspicious man in a vehicle at a business on Route 97 in Barryville. When police located the man, he told them he had a gun and that he would shoot the troopers.
Maine groups receive funds to clean up mercury contamination in the Penobscot River
More than a dozen environmental improvement projects are now being funded through a settlement to clean up mercury contamination in the Penobscot River. In addition to remediation, the 2022 agreement also requires Mallinckrodt US LLC, the former owner of the closed HoltraChem facility, to pay $20 million for various projects, including land conservation, a recreational boat launch facility in Orrington, and a fishway at the Frankfort Dam.

Amtrak Downeaster Upgrades for Safer, Faster Rides in Maine
Amtrak's Media Center is teaming up with the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority (NNEPRA) to roll out some serious upgrades along the tracks from Haverhill, Massachusetts, to Brunswick, Maine. They're dropping over $50 million to install Positive Train Control (PTC), a high-tech system that'll automatically keep trains in check and make trips faster and safer.
