    Film festival begins accepting submissions

The Pecan Pickling Film Festival 2024, slated to begin on Friday, September 13 and run through that weekend, is accepting short film submissions until July 8.

Directors and producers are encouraged to submit projects for consideration, according to Equity Films President Patricia Ferguson.

Ferguson is the founder of The Pecan Pickling Film Festival which premiered last year in Windsor and saw film enthusiasts and industry professionals come together to celebrate creative talent from across the country.

“This year the festival is set to showcase an array of compelling short films locally and from across the country, alongside an exciting lineup of feature films and the introduction of Corporate/Commercial short films, marking a significant milestone in the festival’s journey,” noted Ferguson. “With a vision to create a thriving film ecosystem that seamlessly integrates the realms of art, commerce and community, Equity Films invites the local community and film enthusiasts to join in and support this groundbreaking initiative.”

The seed for a local film festival was planted in 2022 when Ferguson first proposed the idea to the Bertie County Commissioners and asked for their approval to form a regional film commission. The inaugural festival was held last September with large crowds attending the three-day event featuring local and national talent.

“By introducing feature films and corporate shorts we are expanding the scope of the festival to provide a platform for more industry-wide voices and storytelling that allows businesses to creatively convey their brand message, products and services,” Ferguson said. “Our goal is to create a program that nurtures talent, fosters creativity and strengthens the bond between art, commerce and community.”

Last year’s festival proved to be a captivating experience filled with a variety of screenings of short films, discussions, workshops and red carpet premieres. Opening night festivities included a gown studded red carpet walk to the opening night feature, offering opportunities to mingle with filmmakers, industry professionals, directors and emerging creative talent.

Ferguson has been an advocate for promoting Bertie County’s natural beauty as a filming location to national and international creators. As founder and President of Equity Films, Ferguson has been involved with the film industry for decades.

A regional film commission would help move that project forward and would be recognized by industry executives. The development of a film festival helps in showcasing local talent, attracting industry executives and showcasing the county’s tremendous natural assets.

“Equity Films is dedicated to championing the spirit of creativity in the film industry and the Pecan Pickling Film Festival serves as a testament to their commitment to fostering a vibrant and sustainable film culture in Eastern/Northeastern North Carolina,” said Ferguson.

The festival is supported by numerous volunteers on Ferguson’s team. Nicole Outlaw and Laura Orsini have worked diligently with Ferguson to develop and promote the festival while attracting and encouraging local talent to participate.

The festival is a free event throughout the weekend and is funded through donations and sponsorships. For more information on the festival, sponsorships, red carpet ticket sales and event details contact equity-films.org
