On April 12, the communities of Sun Prairie, DeForest and Windsor will begin to be served by a new newspaper, The Star. The Star in print form, on its website and in its e-edition and corresponding app, will contain all the news and advertising content you now get in two publications — the Sun Prairie Star and the DeForest Times-Tribune.

In The Star, you’ll still get municipal and county government news as well as all the coverage of local schools, community events, arts, opinion, sports, and local advertising that you’re accustomed to seeing in the Sun Prairie Star and DeForest Times-Tribune. Your favorite columnists will still be there.

The Star will publish twice a week — in print on Fridays and in an e-edition on Tuesdays — in line with our current Sun Prairie Star schedule. As a bonus, those who now subscribe to the DeForest Times-Tribune will get an extra day of local e-edition coverage on Tuesdays with news from DeForest — plus Windsor and Sun Prairie.

Current Sun Prairie Star subscribers, meanwhile, will see new extra coverage from neighboring DeForest and Windsor.

If you already subscribe to either the Sun Prairie Star or the DeForest Times-Tribune — or to both — you need do nothing more; we’ll automatically switch you over to The Star on April 12 in print, on the web and for the e-edition.

If you’re not currently a subscriber and would like to try out The Star beginning April 12, we are offering a special introductory rate for non-subscribers of $3.99 a month for four months, with print and online access. For more information call (608) 764-0299.

Roberta Baumann, the current editor of both the Sun Prairie Star and DeForest Times-Tribune, will be the editor of The Star, under the direction of APG Southern Wisconsin Regional Editor Karyn Saemann. No other news or sports reporting staff changes are planned.

“Our plan is to not only continue the same level of news coverage you get now as a subscriber — but to expand that to additionally offer you stories from neighboring communities and in the case of current DeForest subscribers, access to a Tuesday e-edition,” Baumann said. “Our reporting staff is looking forward to covering news on a very local level in each individual community, but also sees this as an opportunity to write about issues that have broader, area-wide interest.”

With three communities to cover, we’re planning for The Star to have more pages than The Sun Prairie Star or the DeForest Times-Tribune. It will also have a larger, combined circulation that we hope will be especially beneficial to advertisers.

“This aligns with our focus at APG Southern Wisconsin, on continually improving our local news coverage to bring you the very best stories and information, presented on a variety of print and digital platforms,” Saemann said.

Subscribers will see no change in our circulation and customer service numbers. You’ll still be able to call us at (608) 764-0299 or email print.subscription@ecpc.com if you don’t receive your newspaper, or have a question about your subscription.

Once The Star launches, we’ll be looking for your feedback on the change. You’ll be able to share your thoughts by contacting customer service, or by reaching out directly to Baumann at (608) 729-3697.

Newspaper staff will host a community gathering from 6 — 8 p.m. April 18 at the DeForest Area Public Library, to share more about our plans for The Star. We would also like to hear from you, our subscribers, about what you’d like to see in your newspaper. We hope you’ll join us.

We’re excited to launch The Star on April 12. We look forward to you joining us in that, and thanks for remaining a loyal subscriber.
