Crews battling 'out of control' grass fire on CR 1140 in Smith County
SMITH COUNTY, Texas — Crews are responding to an "out of control" grass fire on County Road 1140. Officials from Smith County Emergency District 2 confirmed that a fire broke out in a wooded area near 14104 County Road 1140 and Oak Springs Road around 2:32 p.m. Nikki Simmons with SCESD2 said that the fire is approaching a nearby structure as well as woods. SCESD2 Dixie Engine 172 & Brush 172 are responding.

Smith County and Lindale crews extinguish residential fire
LINDALE, Texas — Firefighters from Smith County and Lindale quickly controlled a residential structure fire on Thursday, July 4, 2024.Smith County Emergency Services District 2 (ESD#2) dispatched Engine-122, Engine-128, and Battalion-2 to assist the Lindale Fire Department. Upon arrival, the Battalion Chief declared it a working fire and assumed command, then attached Battalion-1, Engine-172, Tender-172, and Tender-136 to the response.Crews swiftly gained control of the fire, according to Smith County ESD#2. The department reported having six units and 14 personnel on the scene.

Retired military dogs reunite with their former Marine Corps handlers after years apart
Two military service members -- U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Isaac Weissend and Marine Corps veteran Dalton Stone -- have been reunited with the dogs they handled in service overseas. Weissend and Stone first connected while serving in Japan with one another as military dog, or K-9, handlers. They built a strong bond with each other and became best friends. They also created strong connections with their respective German shepherd counterparts, 6-year-old male Poker and 6-year-old female Aida. Poker and Weissend even protected President Joe Biden during a special mission in Korea, where they swept flights, hotels, vehicles, and buildings for explosives. "Every day with Poker was a great day," Weissend said, according to American Humane, an animal-welfare organization that helped reunite the men with their K-9s.
