Orlando Pride Secures Draw Against North Carolina Courage in NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup Opener
The Orlando Pride nabbed themselves a hard-fought point this past Saturday, playing against the North Carolina Courage in what proved to be a gritty opener for the NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup. The match, steeped in competitive fervor, ended with a draw in regulation time but escalated to a penalty shootout where the Pride were narrowly outscored 5-4 by the Courage, who thus bagged two points for their efforts, according to an article by WESH.

“Big effort from the players after these couple weeks that we had been playing every three days. I would like to value that effort. Two teams tried to put a good performance, and from our side, in the first half, we had control, but we were not as dangerous as we were coming in the prior games. They kept possession sometimes in their half, but not a dangerous place so we were in that side control. But we wanted more. Nico [Lodeiro] was helping us just to do a job, or in a position that is not very frequent for him, but I think he did great. And in the second half, it seems like we brought more energy and we started creating better chances and we have the game 1-0, which is something that this year has been a challenge for us to open the games. And then this goal that we concede, this is where we have that sensation of frustration for us that it was not that they did a lot of stuff to tie the game...and we had a few very clear options, including that last one that I, we all thought it was Luis [Muriel’s] moment to unbalance the game. We work with a bit of frustration, but as well, we are very proud of what the boys have done.”
💬 McKinley Crone: 'It's just such an honor' to play for hometown club against North Carolina Courage
“I think the experience of a shootout was one we haven't experienced ever, so having gone through that, it gives the players that sort of experience going forward. You can't replicate a shootout, as much as you can practice that ‘putting the pressure on’, you just can't do that in training. I thought the players dealt with it well. You know, it didn't go our way, which is unfortunate, but overall in terms of the game, we're very pleased to come [out of] here with a point. There’s no hiding in it, we've got a lot of players away on international duty. North Carolina didn't have that case, so they were a little bit more fluid with how they played. You could see that, those connections, that team chemistry, which took us a bit. But fair play to the players to come here one-nil down and have the desire and the character to come back and score the goal, it's brilliant to see. And we continue that momentum that we had in the league into the tournament now.”
