Several area cycling groups will be marking Independence Day with the Third Annual Winterville Fourth of July Ride starting at 6:30 a.m. Thursday at the Winterville Depot, 217 Worthington St.

Last year’s ride drew about 80 riders and organizers are hoping to break 100 this year, said organizer Tony Parker. Winterville Mayor Ricky Hines is set to say a few words and see the riders off.

“Our goal is to show the positive side of riding, the camaraderie and fellowship as well as the economic impact cycling has on our community,” said Parker.

This is an unsupported ride with no escort. Riders are encouraged to bring plenty of water. Helmets are required and blinky lights are highly recommended. No urban or beach cruisers.

There will be two distances for riders, an 18-mile out and back and a 30-mile loop. The group will meet for breakfast at The Biscuit & Bean after the ride.
