WISCONSIN RAPIDS – PetSmart is on track to open early next year in Wisconsin Rapids.
A PetSmart spokesperson told a Daily Tribune reporter Tuesday the store expects to open in January, although a specific timeline has not been finalized. The company originally aimed to open this fall, but the project has been slightly delayed, the spokesperson said.
The national retailer confirmed in March it would join Harbor Freight, Five Below and Marshalls, retail stores that have already opened in the former Shopko space. PetSmart will be the fourth and final retailer in that space.
According to the PetSmart website, the national chain also offers a pet hotel service, Doggie Day Camp and dog training services, along with supplies, medicines, treats and food for dogs, cats, birds, fish, reptiles and other small pets.
The building itself also has 25,000 square feet of warehouse in the back available to lease, said Tom Richards, a partner with Cool Investment LLC − an Arizona-based business that purchased the Shopko building and lot.
A timeline of the Shopko redevelopment project
Redevelopment at the former Shopko building has been in the works since April 2022 when Cool Investment LLC purchased the building and parking lot. In March 2023, four retail stores were announced for the space: Big Lots, Marshalls, Harbor Freight and Five Below. Plans called for splitting the large building into four separate stores.
In the time since that announcement, three stores have already opened, one was replaced, and two additional developments have been announced for the edge of the parking lot.
Harbor Freight opened July 11, 2023, and Five Below held its grand opening celebration Nov. 10. Marshalls opened April 18.
In November, Richards confirmed Big Lots would no longer open at the site and would be replace by a national retailer. PetSmart announced its plans in March.
Tidal Wave Auto Spa car wash will open in 2025 at the edge of the parking lot, near the existing Sudzee Car Wash.
Valvoline Instant Oil Change will also build along the edge of the lot, on the corner of 12th Street South and East Riverview Expressway.
