What are the best food trucks in the Wisconsin Rapids area? Readers share their favorites.

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – As food trucks become more popular dining options, there are more mobile restaurants popping up to choose from for a meal, beverage or a sweet treat in the Wisconsin Rapids area.

That rise in popularity encouraged the new owners of Steve’s Rental — now Premier Rental — to start The Food Truck Lot in its parking lot at 940 Huntington Ave. in Wisconsin Rapids, offering a place for food truck owners to park their trucks and serve their food.

In June, the Daily Tribune asked readers which food trucks are their favorite and what they like about them. A few dozen people responded, sharing a variety of tasty options.

Wisco Grill

The top food truck recommendation was Wisco Grill. More than a dozen people shared it’s their go-to choice.

Grace Rasmussen said Wisco Grill has good food that’s affordable, fresh and made on the spot.

Wisco Grill makes stops throughout central Wisconsin, primarily in Wood and Portage counties. Its menu includes a variety of burgers like a Double Smash Burger with American cheese, ketchup, mustard, pickle, onion, tomato and lettuce; a Double Bacon Smash with American cheese, bacon, ketchup, mustard, pickle, onion, tomato and lettuce; a Mushroom & Swiss with a double smash burger, melted Swiss cheese and sauteed mushrooms; and a Jalapeno Smash with a double smash burger, pepper jack cheese, bacon, BBQ sauce, jalapenos and grilled onion.

Customers can also build their own smash burgers as a single, double, triple, or 4x4 burger, adding condiments and extras. Wisco Grill also offers a sides menu, including fries, cheese fries, bacon cheese fries and three cheese curd options.

Tommy's Tamales and More

A few people told the Daily Tribune that Tommy's Tamales and More is their favorite food truck.

Sam Walker likes the chorizo y papas or the al pastor at the food truck. Patti Carcy said the homemade tamales are the best.

Tommy's Tamales and More features a menu of tacos, tamales and gorditas, and the truck makes stops throughout central Wisconsin, including Wisconsin Rapids, Nekoosa, Rome and Friendship. Purple Basil

A few people shared Purple Basil is their favorite food truck . While the truck is parked regularly at the Purple Basil Terrace in Plover, the truck also makes stops throughout central Wisconsin, including in Wisconsin Rapids, Plover and Stevens Point.

Purple Basil offers a variety of menu items like Italian Nachos that include corn chips, Alfredo sauce and mozzarella cheese topped with parmesan and a special pico. The menu also features a meatball sub, zucchini marinara, Italian mac, chicken Alfredo and sausage marinara. Customers can also create their own pasta dishes, choosing a pasta type, sauce, vegetables and protein. Purple Basil offers choices of cavatappi or zucchini noodles, Alfredo, marinara or a mix of both, broccoli, mushroom, chicken and Italian sausage. Pastas include parmesan cheese and garlic bread.

KamBray's Mobile Restaurant & Catering

A few people also shared KamBray's Mobile Restaurant & Catering is their favorite food truck.

Diane Jonas said she likes KamBray's because it offers awesome food and is the only food truck to offer gluten-free days for people with celiac disease.

"Hats off to them for the great service they provide us," she wrote.

The food truck offers a variety of wraps, sandwiches and sides. On gluten-free days, the truck and all equipment are cleaned, fryers are boiled out and replaced with new oil, and all items are made with gluten-free ingredients. The gluten-free menu includes items like cheese curds, Reuben chips, street tacos, chicken strips and more.
