GROVETOWN, Ga. (WJBF) — A local group is hosting a PCOS Awareness event.

The CSRA PCOS Support Group’s event takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 7, at Grovetown Trails at Euchee Creek, at 5600 Harlem Grovetown Rd in
Grovetown. This event is dedicated to supporting those with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.

Health experts say the condition can cause irregular cycles, fertility issues, weight gain, and more. “For the most part, they say it’s inherited, like you get your brown eyes from your mom,” shared Andrea Oellerich.

Initially, she faced fertility issues, and doctors prescribed Clomid with uncertain results. “They’ll just give you Metformin for insulin resistance, tell you to lose weight, and put you on birth control. I wasn’t going to accept that as an answer,” she recalled.

After having her daughter, Andrea sought a more definitive diagnosis, leading to an ultrasound. “That’s when the doctor saw I had a bunch of cysts on my ovaries,” she said.

At the September 7 event, women like her, and their families, can find support and get their questions answered. “Many women have it and don’t know they have it or don’t know how to deal with the challenges,” Andrea explained.

The event features an OB/GYN speaker, a NASM-certified personal trainer, mental health resources, free massages, and more.

Registration is free and available on their Facebook page or at pcos.ch/pcos-tour . Space is limited.

According to the World Health Organization, PCOS affects 8-13% of women of childbearing age. Up to 70% of those women don’t know they have it. It’s the top cause of ovulation issues and a major reason for infertility.
