Veterans Voices: Southwest Virginia National Guard company celebrates 20-year Iraqi Freedom reunion

ABINGDON, Va. (WJHL)- This week marked 20 years since the 1032nd Transportation Company from Virginia’s Army National Guard returned home after serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

“The only other person that really understands a veteran is another veteran. We have the same shared experiences,” said current first sergeant Josh Brummit. “Being able to come together and hear some stories, and remember stories, experiences that we all went through. It’s a great time to really just be around them.”

The group celebrated in Abingdon on April 6. They were overseas from 2003 to 2004. The support group hauled everything from supplies to ammo and even officials.

Everyone from the company made it home, but what happened in the war came back with them.

“We had several commit suicide, and that’s real hard because you make it through what you make it through over there and you get back here and you think you get through the hard part over there, but you still got to live with it over here,” said Farron Collier.
