    North Carolina man charged in Smyth County deputy murder dies in hospital

    SMYTH COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — A North Carolina man charged with the murder of a Smyth County deputy has died.

    According to a release from the Commonwealth Attorney of Smyth County Phillip Blevins, Timothy Wayne Goodman, 65, died at the Johnson City Medical Center on Friday morning.

    On Aug. 9, Deputy Hunter Reedy was fatally shot during a traffic stop in Smyth County. Deputy Michael Fedorchuk was also injured in the shooting.

    “The tragic loss of Deputy Reedy has deeply affected our community and the law enforcement
    family,” Blevins said in a news release. “My office remains dedicated to honoring Deputy Reedy’s life and service. The death of Goodman concludes a significant chapter in this matter, but our commitment to supporting Deputy Reedy’s family, the other officers involved, and the entire law enforcement community is as strong as ever.”

    Goodman also faced four counts of attempted aggravated murder in addition to the aggravated murder charge of Reedy.

    Blevins said his office will continue to work with law enforcement to ensure all aspects of the case are addressed.

    The Smyth County Sheriff’s Office has also organized its own Fund the First campaigns for both Reedy and Deputy Michael Fedorchuk , who was injured in the same shooting that killed Reedy.

    Funeral services for Reedy will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Chilhowie Christian Church. His family will receive friends on Friday from 3-6 p.m.
