EMORY, Va. (WJHL) — As Emory & Henry University settles into its new status as a university and a full member of the NCAA Division II , the Department of Athletics has released the new logo for the Wasps.

The logo’s predecessor had been in use by Emory & Henry Athletics since 2013, according to a news release from the university.

Emory & Henry officially gains university status

The school’s primary logo is still the “E&H Shield,” but the new Wasp be prominent among the university’s athletics.

Emory & Henry Director of Athletics Kyle Sensabaugh said in a statement that the new logo reflects the university’s approach to competition.

“We mean business,” Sensabaugh said in the release. “Our new Wasp icon makes that clear with its fierce and fighting attitude. Our teams are ready to compete and win and we wanted an updated graphic identity that said as much. Our students coming in for fall sports are prepared, trained and ready to compete.”

Emory & Henry becomes full NCAA Division II member

New Wasps gear featuring the new logo can be found at The Merc in Emory or online.

Emory & Henry traces the origins of the Wasps nickname, championed by the mascot Stinger, to Sept. 14, 1921. Emory & Henry traveled to Knoxville to play the University of Tennessee, and the Vols only managed a 6-0 lead at halftime. Newspapers referred to the Emory & Henry defense as wasps swarming the ball with their striped socks and jerseys.

Tennessee ultimately won 27-0, but Emory & Henry won its name which was later officially adopted by the institution.
