Officials eye land adjacent to Greene Valley for development

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) — The property located on Edens Road across from the old Greene Valley Development Center is owned by Greene County, Greeneville, and Tusculum. Both city and county officials want to develop medical offices there.

“There may be things like, medical office buildings and the Health Department will be right along Edens Road,” Tusculum Mayor Alan Corley said. “On the property behind Edens Road, back off the road, we hope that there will be some light industrial development, nothing that has noxious odors or loud noises but some light industrial development to provide some good paying jobs for folks.”

Corley told News Channel 11 that the property is currently zoned residential but during a Tusculum Planning Commission meeting, it was approved to be zoned under a new category.

“We had to rezone it so the City of Tusculum created a new zone called MX-2, Mixed Use 2, which allows those kind of developments on that property,” Corley said.

The rezoning is not official until it has been voted on by the Tusculum Board of Mayor and Commissioners on its second reading.

One concern some members of the public have about the development of the property is how it will affect a four-mile trail for people to walk and bike on.

“Part of our agreement with the other communities and that will be with anybody that purchases that property, is that the trail has to remain,” Corley said. “In fact, the Tennessee Valley Authority’s (TVA) concept plan shows some improvements to the trail. It shows adding a pavilion and a little park in the middle of the industrial park.”
