    One dead, one injured after severe storms hit Mississippi

    PEARL, Miss. ( WJTV ) – One person has died and another person has been injured after severe storms moved through Mississippi beginning on April 9, 2024.

    According to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), one death was reported in Scott County, and one injury was reported in Grenada County.

    Sheriff: Yazoo County subdivision should evacuate immediately

    Statewide, MEMA officials said counties have reported 72 homes have been damaged. Initial damage assessments are underway.

    The following damage is preliminary and will change through the assessment process:

    • Grenada – 1 injury, 3 homes
    • Hinds – 6 homes
    • Marshall – 9 homes
    • Scott – 1 death, 45 homes
    • Warren –  3 homes
    • Yazoo – 6 homes

    MEMA encourages residents who’ve sustained damage after a severe weather event to do the following:

    • File an insurance claim.
    • Take photos of the damage to the home.
    • Report damage to county/MEMA via the self-report tool .

    Currently, the Red Cross has opened a shelter:

    • Scott County: 2149 Mississippi 13, Morton MS
