LAUREL, Miss. ( WHLT ) – A Jones County animal shelter is asking the community for help before it could be forced to close its doors.

Officials with the Laurel Animal Rescue League Shelter said they’re in dire need of donations.

“We run solely on donations. And right after Christmas, generally, the first of the year is when our donations will generally slow down, and without the community supporting us, we can’t help support the community and the animals that need it,” said Belinda Ainsworth, board president of the Laurel-Jones County Animal Rescue League.

The shelter depends on donations to take care of its animals and to keep the shelter running.

“We currently have food vet bills. It helps to pay our bills that we have, you know, the water, the power to help pay our salaries,” said Ainsworth.

She said it costs up to $6,000 a month to run the shelter. They currently have enough funds to remain open for about two months.

“We’re getting calls on a daily basis for animals that are stranded and, you know, to help the community out. So, we’re asking for the community to actually help us out because that’s what we’ve always done and that’s what we’ve been here for. And this is what we need at the moment,” Ainsworth stated.

The shelter is asking for cash donations, as well as pet food and cleaning supplies. Donations can be dropped off at the shelter or made online .

The shelter will host an adoption day on Saturday, April 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Petsense in Laurel. Donations will be accepted at the event.
