Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade said the shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Monday, July 8 at the M&M Food Express in the 500 block of Cooper Road.

Wade said the security guard, 60-year-old Roy Love , asked two 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old to leave the scene before they attacked him. He said the teens stole Love’s weapon and shot him with a weapon already in their possession.

The police chief said the motive for the shooting was robbery because the teens wanted to take Love’s weapon. He also said surveillance video showed the attack. Two of the teens ran away from the scene, and the third got away on a bicycle, according to Wade.

The three teenagers were later arrested and each charged with capital murder. They were identified as Wooten, 17-year-old Zaylon Norton, and 16-year-old Kadaris Cohen.
