PERRRY COUNTY, Miss. ( WHLT ) – Beaumont’s aldermen voted to fire half of the town’s police department.

After making a second motion to terminate the officers, the Board of Aldermen voted unanimously on Thursday to fire three out of the town’s five police officers. Only the police chief and a part-time deputy chief remain on staff.

The aldermen declined to give a reason why they were fired due to expected litigation. Mayor Scotty Dailey previously vetoed a motion from the Board to dismiss the officers, causing the aldermen to revote.

“In regards to the City of Beaumont, first of all, I apologize as your supposed leader, and I really say to you that we too will rise as the phoenix, and I feel like things will get better. But at this particular time, we just got to do our due diligence to self-police ourselves, too. We’re going to need more neighborhood watches now. We’re going to need more people to be dependent upon each other until this is resolved,” Dailey said.

The mayor said Perry County deputies will help police the town until new officers are hired.
