The average cost to fill up the gas tank is about 6 cents cheaper this week compared to last. Factors that could push gasoline prices higher—including damaging hurricanes, broader conflict in the Middle East, and refinery outages—have largely failed to materialize.

The Midwest has experienced the most upward pressure on prices at the pump due to some refinery outages. Those have mostly resolved and gas prices in states like Illinois are falling from their month-ago levels when drivers were paying around $4 per gallon, 50 cents more than the national average at the time.

Thousands of gas stations around the country are now selling gas for under $3 per gallon, according to gas price tracking app GasBuddy.

“It seems fitting that, in the run-up to Labor Day, the national average has fallen for four straight weeks to its lowest point since February, giving Americans one last chance to hit the road with gas prices being less of a factor,” GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan said in a statement Monday.
