National Forests in Mississippi accepting comments on proposed recreation fees

JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – The National Forests in Mississippi is accepting comments through October 5, 2024, on proposed recreation fees at certain developed recreation sites and trails across the forest.
According to officials, the proposed fees are more comparable to similar public and private sites in the area. Nearly 30% of the developed recreation sites on the National Forests in Mississippi would remain free.
Once public involvement is complete, the proposed fee changes will be reviewed by a Resource Advisory Committee, who will submit its recommendation to the Regional Forester for a final decision.
The public is invited to comment on the proposed fee changes to the developed recreation program. Comments can be sent to National Forests in Mississippi, Attention: Jacob Rhyne, Recreation Program Manager, 968 Highway 15 South, Laurel, MS 39443 or Jacob.rhyne@usda.gov . Officials said the Forest is considering fee increases because of the costs of operating and maintaining recreation facilities and trails. The Forest will use the additional funds from these fees to manage and improve our recreation sites and trails.
