CANTON, Ohio (WJW) – The race to become the next U.S. Senator representing Ohio is ramping up. Tuesday night, Republican Bernie Moreno held stumping events in Canton and Brecksville.

The businessman and political outsider who is endorsed by former President Donald Trump is crisscrossing the state in a tour bus, making stops in smaller communities that he says make up 80% of the voting population and are often overlooked.

“The goal is to make sure everyone understands I’m going to take into account all of Ohio,” said Moreno. “Unlike Sherrod Brown who spent his entire life living off taxpayer dime, I’ve been a business guy my whole life. People have to get to know who I am.”

What’s going on with Browns Stadium decision? What we know

He told the crowd of about 70 people that he wants to lower inflation, create safer communities, border security, school choice, term limits for politicians and help save American jobs.

During the meet and greet at Johns Bar & Grille in Canton, Moreno took jabs at his opponent for his lengthy political career, serving in the U.S. Senate for decades.

“He’s a guy who has lost 200,000 manufacturing jobs, led to generationally high inflation. We have an open border, we have an assault on American energy. He’s given hundreds of billions of dollars to foreign countries. He pretends he’s for the working man, he absolutely is not. That’s what we’re going to expose in this race,” said Moreno.

But more than 20 protestors and supporters of Sen. Sherrod Brown who were also gathered in the parking lot near a giant blown up symbolic “fat cat” disagreed.

They said they believe Brown does support American workers.

“We don’t need someone trying to steal wages from U.S. workers anymore. We don’t need someone to run on the coattails of Trump either. We need someone who can actually stand on their own two feet like Sherrod Brown does. He knows how to stand up for workers,” said Brett McElfresh.

FOX 8 News reached out to Senator Brown and in a statement, an Ohio Democratic Party spokesperson said in part:

“The fat cat is out of the bag when it comes to Bernie Moreno’s long record putting himself ahead of workers. From stealing his employees’ wages and shredding evidence to try to get out of paying them, to lying about selling Chinese-made cars at Ohio workers’ expense, Ohioans see that Moreno won’t fight for them because he’s only out for himself.”

“The extra bonuses that that fat cat gets keeps my family starving,” McElfresh added.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5.
