AKRON, Ohio (WJW) – The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man killed during an officer-involved shooting in Akron early Saturday morning.

According to the Akron Police Department, officers were investigating after a stolen vehicle was spotted in the Duke and Duchess gas station parking lot in the 2200 block of East Avenue around 1 a.m.

Investigators say a police officer fired two rounds during the incident, striking the suspect. Officers administered first aid, but the man was pronounced dead.

The man, identified as 54-year-old Michael Donnell Jones, died from two gunshot wounds to the torso, the medical examiner’s office confirmed Sunday morning.

During the investigation, officers found a loaded firearm inside the vehicle.

The officer, who has worked with the Akron Police Department for two and a half years, was placed on paid administrative leave, as per standard procedure.

The BCI will be handling the investigation. After that, the case will be handed over to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office for review before it is submitted to the Summit County Grand Jury, police officials said.

An internal investigation is also being done by the Office of Professional Standards and Accountability.

Akron Mayor Shammas Malik released the following statement:

“When an incident such as this occurs, it is tragic for our city, and everyone impacted, especially when a life is lost.

“Officer-involved shootings are often highly nuanced and complex, and some of the toughest situations for a community to grapple with. More information will be released in the coming week, including the body-worn camera footage of the incident, so that we as a community can develop a clearer picture of what transpired.

“My thoughts are with the family of the deceased and with our officers.”
