CUYAHOGA COUNTY, Ohio (WJW) — Sobriety checkpoints , where officials look for impaired drivers, have been planned for three Northeast Ohio counties this week.

Here are the details we have so far:

–An OVI checkpoint is planned in Ottawa Country for 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday. The checkpoint is being set up on Perry Street in Port Clinton. The checkpoint is conjunction with the Port Clinton Police Department, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and Ohio State Highway Patrol.

    — Tuscarawas and Canton Townships are the locations for two OVI checkpoints Thursday, according to the Stark County Sheriff’s Office. The exact area and times have not been announced.

    — The Newburgh Heights Police Department have planned an OVI checkpoint for Friday. The exact location isn’t going to be announced until Friday morning.

    — OSHP’s Cleveland Post also plans to conduct a sobriety checkpoint “this weekend,” but all other details are scarce.

“If you plan to consume alcohol, designate a driver or make other travel arrangements before you drink,” Newburgh Heights police said in a statement. “Don’t let another life be lost for the senseless and selfish act of getting behind the wheel impaired.”

The Supreme Court upheld the use of sobriety checkpoints , which are funded by a federal grant, back in 1990. However, certain protocols must be followed, including announcing the checkpoint to the public beforehand.

“Based on provisional data from the past three years, there have been 30 OVI related crashes within a three-mile radius of the checkpoint as well as 92 OVI arrests made,” OSHP’s Lieutenant Shaun Robinson recently explained in a statement.
