LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (WJW) — Clementine the orange lobster is not only ultra-rare but also extremely lucky after she was recently rescued from a Long Island grocery store and returned to the sea.

According to animal advocacy group Humane Long Island, the “ultra-rare 1-in-30 million” crustacean was noticed in the seafood section of the Southampton Stop & Shop, which arrived in a shipment of brown lobsters in July.

The organization said Clementine quickly became a local celebrity as grocery store managers started feeding her shrimp and giving her nicknames.

After learning about the rare lobster, Humane Long Island reached out to store management, who agreed to donate Clementine so she could be rehabilitated and eventually released back into the sea.

“Humane Long Island consulted a veterinarian, readied a cold saltwater tank for rehabilitation, and set itself on reacclimating the lucky crustacean to the sea,” the organization said in a Facebook post on Wednesday. “Within hours, Clementine was swimming, foraging, and exploring the Long Island Sound, playfully following us around before disappearing into the ocean depths where she’ll travel as far as 100 miles or more each year.”

Earlier this summer, another ultra-rare lobster was found at a Red Lobster in Colorado.
