AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – WKBN 27 First News is hearing from retired teachers for the first time since an investigation was launched into the actions of the board that oversees their pension funds.

The Austintown Retired Teachers Club, a group of former educators who mostly worked in the local school district, meets four times a year to socialize and catch up.

“We get together because we want to see everybody because we were used to seeing everybody when we taught,” said Peggy Bennett.

Even though they’re no longer working in the schools, the group of retirees still celebrate the end of the year.

“It’s a tradition, actually it’s been here since the 1960s — the club. And there’s been a lot of educators that have been through this club,” said Don Kollar.

Wednesday’s gathering at Rachel’s restaurant is the first time they’ve all been together since an investigation was launched into the State Teachers Retirement System Board’s actions.

“There’s always been concern when it comes to STRS because that’s our bread and butter,” Bennett said.

Last week, Gov. Mike DeWine said dozens of recommendations were made to STRS to improve fiduciary performance as a result of numerous audits.

STRS hired a firm for guidance but that firm is terminating its contract. DeWine called it “a huge red flag,” saying it calls into question how STRS is operating and providing oversight.

“If there are problems go ahead and investigate them and let the chips fall where they may,” said Harold Wilson.
