YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — The first R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Day was held Sunday at Penguin City Brewing Company to honor the life of a local youth mentor who was killed in Youngstown.

William “Shimmie” Miller was killed in a shooting in june. He was the founder of the R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Baseball League and was an advocate for non-violence.

Sunday’s festivities include food, games and music at Penguin City.

“Shimmie was what a lot of people considered a father figure, a brother, a good friend, a mentor. So, losing him, it was something that hurt and it’s something where we’re just trying to keep his work alive and doing,” said Daundray Brown with YMCA of Youngstown.

The event also featured a public release of Miller’s book about his life, “Ready Rock Boy.”
