(WKBN) – It’s still summer, but a local doctor thinks it’s time to start thinking about getting that yearly flu shot.

Experts believe the upcoming influenza season will include a relatively new strain of the H3N2 virus . We’re told this year’s vaccine will be tri valiant, meaning it will protect against three different forms of the virus.

“The earlier you take the vaccine is far better than taking the later part of your winter season. So, I insist everyone starting September or October to go ahead and take the flu vaccine,” said Dr. Munir Shah, a local infectious disease specialist.

Shah said it typically takes a month or two for the vaccine to fully take effect so it’s best to be inoculated before the flu season hits its peak.
